Bulungan Aquatic Centre

Jakarta, Indonesia

The recent reopening of the swimming pool at the Bulungan Sports & Cultural Centre in Jakarta, is only the latest chapter in the story of this transformational facility.

The 1960s was a difficult period in the Indonesian capital. Jakarta’s youth were challenged by a culture of gang violence, drugs, and weapons. With local police struggling to contain the unrest, a new approach was needed. Rather than defer to enforcement, an optimistic plan was hatched to give youth better options.

In early 1970, the Bulungan Sports & Cultural Centre was opened to offer a place for sports, culture, arts, and more. The centre focussed on providing youth the chance to enjoy physical, intellectual, and cultural activities and steer them towards a safer, more productive path.

In the years since, the extraordinary venue has expanded and evolved, in 1974 it was visited by Queen Elizabeth II, many competitions and tournaments have been held there – as well as performances and art shows. In 2018, the centre was one of the venues of the Asian Games, as the home of the volleyball competitions. The success of the Bulungan facility made it a model for four more centres that were built throughout Jakarta.

Over time, of course, things age, and recently, it was determined the old concrete pool in the centre needed to be replaced. Myrtha Pools was selected for the refurbishment thanks to its decades of experience in creating high-performance aquatic venues and for its proprietary RenoVaction technology that offers an efficient, environmentally friendly, and competition-quality solution!

The RenovAction solution was able to meet the high standards demanded by the Indonesian government and made it possible for the pool to be quickly refurbished with minimal demolition.  And the all new Olympic-sized pool that opened in spring of 2022 is already a community favourite.
