University of Memphis
Thanks to collaboration between the University of Memphis and the Rose Family Foundation, a fantastic new swimming pool on campus, perfect for swimming and water polo training and competition, was opened in 2023. A forward-thinking project designed to promote water safety and learn-to-swim courses for local residents, it also provides for helping maintain a healthy and active life in an urban setting. This project is dedicated not only to students, but also to everyone with something to gain from aquatics.
This is a special collection of Myrtha technology. The vessel is a single 63-meter pool with a pair of movable bulkheads. One of them is a thermal bulkhead, so that the pool can be configured in different areas, even allowing several activities to take place at the same time with varying temperature regimes. This is the first Myrtha thermal bulkhead of this type in the U.S., and the second in the world.
The pool has also been equipped with the Myrtha Track Start blocks, widely recognized as one of the best approaches in the world for competitive swimming. Along with that are a set of Myrtha Backstroke ledges, a removable footrest device developed and manufactured by Myrtha Pools to assist backstrokers in starting. These are equipped with a new structure consisting of a steel base covered with a non-slip material for reliable traction. The new system is height-adjustable, depending on the swimmer’s needs, and easily removable from the block. As soon as the athlete starts, officials can smoothly remove the ledge so that it is safely out of the way for the remainder of the race.
This facility is destined to become a regional hub for both aquatic competition and regional water safety programming, with an end goal of reducing drowning rates and promoting enjoyment of the water among young people.
