Mount Kelly College Devon, England
Anne, Princess Royal, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, officially opened the Mount Kelly College pool this January.
Founded in 1877 in the city of Tavistock, between Devon and Cornwall, the school is situated in a huge park and surrounded by lush gardens. Mount Kelly College is a private foundation and school established with the aim to educate Navy Officers sons and daughters while offering a variety of sports facilities and an adventure park for the students fun activities.
At the end of 2016 Mounty Kelly College completed its range of facilities with a new, important pool.
The new pool, designed by Myrtha, is a London Olympic Games 2012 legacy, size 50×16 m with 2 m depth, permanently reinstalled in the College.
HRH the Princess Royal was the special guest at the opening ceremony. As an Olympian herself and member of the Olympic committee she could not miss this awaited event.
The Royal Princess arrived by helicopter right after lunch. She met the college dignitaries, the team in charge of the project, community representatives and of course, Mount Kelly College students and alumni sports champions.
A highlight of the opening was an impressive swimming exhibition with over 120 members of the swimming team, all in the water at the same time: a symbol of the capacity of the pool and the capabilities of the athletes.
Paraswimmers then entered the pool together with Mark Ormrod, former Royal Marine, and Help for Heroes Ambassador (a charity organization created to help wounded British soldiers after September 11, 2001). Mr. Ormrod learned to swim again at Mount Kelly after serious injuries sustained in Afghanistan.
The show concluded with a swimming exhibition by the children of Whitchurch and Horrabridge Primary Schools, supported by the older members of the swim team.
Having been part of the London 2012 Olympic committee, the Princess Royal spoke about how, for her, the opening of the pool, legacy of the Games, represented the closing of the circle.
Before leaving the college, the Princess Royal unveiled a commemorative plaque affirming how the new facility represents a way to open doors and encourage people to make the best use of this Olympic legacy which greatly benefits the school.
Many Mount Kelly alumni also took part at the ceremony as a delegation of those who have reached international success in the world of sports. Such is the case of Olympic swimmers Sharron Davies and Andy Jameson and Paralympic athletes Claire Chashmore and Mikey Jones, decorated at Rio 2016.
As a further legacy of Olympic Games, another pool of London 2012 has been permanently installed at the Royton Leisure Centre in UK.
