From Aging Concrete to Modern Aquatic Centre: Port Hardy Chooses Myrtha

The concrete swimming pool at the Port Hardy Recreation Centre in Vancouver, Canada, was a hub of sport activity for the local community, but over the years it had experienced serious problems on a daily basis, including water leaks.

Stantec, the architect who oversaw the project, recommended Myrtha RenovAction technology to bring the old pool back to life quickly and without disruption, while taking into account the cost and impact on the environment and the community.

Built to Last: Myrtha Pools’ Edge in Durability and Reliability

Older, typically concrete, pools can become obsolete as they age. Myrtha’s RenovAction technology, using the Myrtha Pools modular, engineered system, is ideal for swimming pool refurbishment. Depending on pool condition, it may be the walls, the floor or the entire pool structure that has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. The flexible Myrtha RenovAction technology allows us to refurbish only the areas that are failing and can often be carried out without any significant demolition.

Myrtha proved to be the most suitable solution for renovating the centre: its combined technologies allowed the pool to be renovated without having to completely demolish the existing structure, while at the same time giving it greater durability, resistance and reliability thanks to the quality of the stainless steel used.

Heritage and innovation: how Myrtha transformed an old pool into a modern aquatic hub.

The completion of the project, supported by architect Stantec and dealer Myrtha Hollandia Gardens, has provided the Port Hardy community with a new tank perfect for swimming and diving, as well as a play area, thanks to a slide.

Heather Nelson-Smith CAO of the District of Port Hardy: “The rejuvenation of the Port Hardy Pool through the installation of the Myrtha Pool liner system, combined with upgraded pumps, advanced disinfection, efficient heating systems, modernized HVAC, electrical, and filtration systems, has transformed our over 45-year-old facility into a modern aquatic hub. This essential investment has preserved a cornerstone of the North Island, ensuring it continues to serve as a vibrant gathering place for residents and visitors alike. With these comprehensive renovations, we anticipate year-round operations, supporting our community’s health, recreation, and connection for years to come.”

Dan Thompson, Myrtha Pools Country Manager Canada: “The Port Hardy Recreation Centre built 45 years ago a perfect example of making old pools new again. It’s essentially a brand-new pool with a state of art PVC welded membrane and new stainless-steel walls and rim flow gutters and new black gutter grating”.
