Since its opening, The Dome has become one of Doncaster’s best-known leisure destinations. The extensive complex brings together swimming, ice skating, fitness, dining and entertainment under one roof.
As part of the redevelopment of The Lagoons, its aquatic area was reimagined to replace the existing attractions and create a safer, more engaging experience for families. Myrtha Pools contributed to the redevelopment through the design of the themed splash area and the structural integration of the new Volcano Run racer slides. The concept combines two complementary narratives: the elemental power of a volcano and the sense of adventure and discovery associated with a gold rush.
The new indoor splash play area follows a Gold Rush theme and features bespoke glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) spray elements and interactive water toys designed specifically for the space. Children can control jets, redirect water flows and activate different mechanisms, making water an active part of the play experience while encouraging movement, curiosity and exploration.

One of the main design challenges was connecting the splash area with the new slide structures while creating a cohesive, immersive and safe environment. Rock walls, lava formations and precious stone detailing recreate the atmosphere of a journey through the interior of a volcano, visually connecting the different attractions.
Volcano Run comprises two racer slides suspended by cables from the existing roof structure. The slides pass through the building envelope and extend partly outside, requiring precise coordination between the new slide geometry, the Grade II-listed structure and the aquatic environment below. Myrtha Pools’ structural engineering expertise was essential in integrating the attraction into these complex constraints.
The project was delivered in collaboration with Alliance Leisure, working alongside project managers Abacus, architects Saunders Boston, principal contractor Universal and Myrtha dealer Ft Leisure. Close coordination between the different partners helped bring together the project’s creative, architectural and technical requirements.
The Dome demonstrates how aquatic design, engineering and themed storytelling can work together in the refurbishment of an established leisure centre. Rather than simply replacing the previous attractions, the project has created a renewed family destination designed to encourage play, shared experiences and return visits.
